Missing Women in Canada from 1971-2002
Finding the names of all the missing in Canada is a tough job. While we do compile stats on missing children, there is no such references for the missing women.
I was directed to the site Turning point, and found this list compiled in 2002. A few years old, it is a surprisingly detailed list.

HELEN BETTY OSBORNE, aged 19 was abducted by four men and brutally murdered near The Pas, Manitoba, on November 13, 1971. Although four men participated in her rape and murder, only one man was convicted 17 years later and served five years of a life sentence
COLLEEN SHOOK, of Burnaby, BC, stabbed to death while getting off a bus. UNSOLVED

JUDY DICK, aged 14 of BC repeatedly stabbed in heart and stomach in BC. 27 years later an Ontario man has been charged wtih her murder.
CHARLENE CATHOLIQUE, aged 15. DOB June 23, 1975. .Missing since July 18, 1990 from Snowdrift, Northwest Territories Canada., where she attended a conference. UNSOLVED.

ANN RUBY THRELFELL, 24, of Vancouver, BC, strangled to death, Jan. 12, 1980.UNSOLVED
JACKALEEN PATRICIA DYCK, aged 23 years old, stabbed 28 times as her two young children slept in the next room, in her home in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on October 3, 1980. UNSOLVED
1981
MARY JANE SERLOIN, aged 35, missing on December 23, 1981.
Mary Jane’s nude body was found in in Lethbridge, Alberta on December 25, 1981.
John Wayne Crawford was convicted of her murder. He was sentenced to ten years in prison, and was released in 1989. He immediately went on another murder spree rapping, torturing and killing at least three other young first Nations women.

REBECCA GUNO, aged 23, drug addicted prostitute disappeared from downtown eastside Vancouver June 23, 1983. Reported missing June 25, 1983. UNSOLVED

YVONNE MARLENE ABIGOSIS, aged 23.. born November 23d, 1957, last seen on January 1st, 1984 and reported missing on May 22nd, 2002. UNSOLVED
CONSTANCE LYNNE CAMERON, strangled August 3, 1984 in Winnipeg, Manitoba.Constance’s body was found face down with her arms stretched over her head. A black tank top, which she had been wearing, was rolled up to her neck suggesting that her body had been dragged to this location.UNSOLVED
1985
UNIDENTIFIED first nations girl between 14 – 16, whose skull was found in Stanley Park(Vancouver)near Beaver Lake, July 17, 1990. It is believed she was killed sometime between 1985 and 1990. UNSOLVED
RACHEL TURLEY, 20, found Oct. 28, 1985, beaten and strangled . in Vancouver .UNSOLVED

CHANTAL MARIE VENNE, 21, in Esquimalt, BC, was found strangled with the belt of her coat and her hands bound. with the belt of her coat and her hands bound. Was tortured, sexually assaulted and her partly clad body dumped in an industrial area on Feb. 25, 1986.UNSOLVED
DONNA ROSE KISS, aged 25, of BC on Aug. 2, 1986. She was strangled with a tie and her body was dumped UNSOLVED
1987
BERNADETTE LECLAIR, raped and murdered in Thunder Bay, Ontario in 1987. A man was finally arrested in July, 2000, but a trial has not yet been had. UNSOLVED
DONNA CHARLIE,from Fort Ware, BC. raped and murdered at the Sportsman Hotel in Prince George BC in 1987. UNSOLVED

NAOMI LEIGH DESJARLAIS was found murdered in Regina in 1987. UNSOLVED
CAROL RUBY DAVIS, aged 29, whose partly nude body was dumped in the bush near Wiggins Ave. in Burnaby, BC, June 20, 1987. She was the mother of two and a known drug user.She had been stabbed to death. UNSOLVED

ROSE MINNIE PETERS, 28, of Vancouver, BC strangled, beaten and sexually assaulted April 3, 1988. UNSOLVED
TERESSA WILLIAMS, aged 16. Teressa is a know drug user and sex trade worker in the downtown east side Vancouver. She was last seen in July 1988 and reported missing in March 1999. UNSOLVED
LISA MARIE GAVIN, 21, of Vancouver, BC, beaten, sexually assaulted and strangled before being dumped in a lane behind Knight Rd. Aug. 13/88. UNSOLVED
GEORGETTE FLINT, aged 19. Her her half-naked decomposed body was found in September 1988 in Alberta

FRANCES ANN GRANT, 33, of Vancouver, whose nude body was found dumped behind a house June , 1989. UNSOLVED
WENDY POOLE, aged 26, of Vancouver, found beaten to death Jan. 26, 1989 on the second floor of a Downtown Eastside housing co-op. She was the mother of one and was pregnant with her second child. A man arrested in connection with her death was later acquitted. UNSOLVED
1990
CHARLENE KERR, 29, of Vancouver, BC. discovered in a pool of blood in a Gastown Hotel. She was a drug addicted prostitute and is believed to have been killed during a robbery in 1990. UNSOLVED
JANE LOUISE SUTHERLAND, a Cree teenager,She’d been strangled and her skull crushed with repeated blows from a blunt instrument in Ottawa area in 1990. UNSOLVED
BONNIE KATE WHALAN, 32, of Vancouver BC whose remains were found near the Seymour River in North Vancouver, April 2, 1990. UNSOLVED
CHERI LYNN SMITH, aged 18, of Victoria, BC, who had been a peer counsellor and a B-plus student in Victoria until she met her teenage boyfriend who later became her pimp. She disappeared in June 1990.Her badly decomposed body was found dumped in bushed in a Saanich regional park, Sept. 9, 1990.She was beaten to death. Police believe her murder is linked to the the murders of three other prostitutes..UNSOLVED

MELISSA NICHOLSON, 17, found slain beside a gravel road at Shawnigan lake, BC, June 11, 1991. UNSOLVED
GLENDA MORRISSEAU, aged 19. Glenda, a student at R.B. Russell School, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Last seen alive during the early morning hours of Wednesday, July 17, 1991 Glenda’s partially naked and battered body was discovered on Wednesday, August 7, 1991, in a St. Boniface industrial area, about five kilometers from where she was last seen. CRYSTAL WRIGHT, aged 19, of Kelowna, BC, found dead at the Abbott Villa Inn, Sept. 26,1991. The man who killed her turned himself in at the police station claiming he was drunk at the time. He got 2 1/2 years in jail. She was seven months pregnant.

CRYSTA LYNN DAVID, 21, found March 25, 1992, smothered to death in her basement suite in New Westminster, BC. UNSOLVED
PATRICIA PENDLETON, 29, of Mission, BC, stabbed 21 times in the throat and 5 times in the torso with two separate knives in June /92;There was no evidence of sexual activity, but the wounds were consistent with torture. Her skull had been fractured by one or more blows. Scott Clifford Aune, 29, also of Mission was charged with second degree murder in the vicious killing, but was found not guilty. UNSOLVED
SHELLEY NAPOPE, aged 16, (Disappeard, summer, 1992; Found Murdered 1994) Shelley was brutally raped tortured then murdered at a sweat lodge site. When her body was found there were still tobacco ties in the trees surrounding her body.

UNIDENTIFIED, aged 18-35, found September 28, 1992 in the St.John River just south of Fredricton, New Brunswick, Canada.Cause of death was homicide.
This woman’s bleached skull was found by a duck hunter on the shores of Gilbert’s Island, an uninhabited low-lying island in the Saint John River, near Fredericton, N.B. Police believe the body was carried there a year or two before by the flood waters that immerse the islands each spring. After a search police found a pony tail of woman’s hair, her clothes and half her bones at the base of one grove of trees.UNSOLVED

LALONNIE FRANCES THIBERT, 25, Sexually assaulted and dismembered with a chainsaw, stuffed into a heavy mail sack and buried in a shallow grave in a wooded area in Langley, BC,November, 12,1993. David Ernest Rhodes, sentenced to six years for manslaughter.
PAMELA JOY CAMERON, aged 16, of Surrey BC, strangled and buried under leaves less than four blocks from where she was last seen. She went missing and within a half hour of being unaccounted for was being looked for, however police would not look until the next day when they found her body with help from a police dog.
Mitchell James Owen, pled guilty to the first degree murder of Pamela Cameron and was sentenced to the madatory term of life in prison without parole for 25 years. He was previously convicted and sentenced to 9 years for the 1982 rape and robbery of a Vancovuer woman attacked in the Woodward’s parking lot. He is a suspect in several other unsolved murders.

UNIDENTIFIED NATIVE WOMAN, mid 30’s, Vancouver, BC. A woman’s body was found stabbed to death in a Mt.Pleasant apartment. Police received an anonymous call saying a woman’s body could be found in the 700 block E. 7th Avenue on March 2 1994. UNSOLVED
ANGELA ARSENEAULT, 17, drug addicted and worked in the sex trade. Last seen in 1994 in downtown eastside Vancouver.. UNSOLVED
RAMONA WILSON, aged 15, was hitchhiking to her friends home in Smithers, BC, on June 11,
1994. Ramona’s body was found a year later near the Smithers Airport. UNSOLVED
JANET SYLVESTRE, aged 38. October, 1994. Janet’s naked body was discovered in a grove of trees near Saskatoon. She had been murdered.
Previously raped by John Wayne Crawford. He is a suspect but never charged.UNSOLVED
ROXANNE THIARA, aged 15 disappeared from Prince George, went missing in Nov, 1994.Her body was discovered dumped near Burns Lake. UNSOLVED

RHONDA RUNNING BIRD , aged 25. DOB: November 22, 1969. Missing since March 30, 1995 in the Swan Lake Recreational Area, near Rocky Mountain House, Alberta. . HEALTH: poor. She was using a kidney colostomy bag due to a severe beating. She was scheduled for surgery March 31, 1995.UNSOLVED

VICTORIA LYNN YOUNKER aged 35, of Vancouver, BC whose body was found near Mission, BC. It has been there for some time.Victoria was also a Vancouver prostitute and it is felt her murder may be by the same suspect in two other murders of prostitutes whose bodies were found in the same area. He has since been returned to prison on parole violation but has never been charged with her murder. UNSOLVED

RICHARD “KELLIE” LITTLE, born March 12th, 1969. Richard – or Kellie, aged 28 – was last seen on April 23d, 1997 and reported missing on April 30th, 1997. Kellie is an aboriginal transsexual. Richard, also known as Kellie, has a noticeable cleft palate. She is suspected as being one of the victims of the Vancouver Downtown Eastside Killers. UNSOLVED

They describe her as a young woman who loved her native heritage, made regalia and danced at traditional pow wows and loved to make bannock.Robert (Willie) Pickton charged with murder.

CRYSTAL LEE PASKEMIN, aged 21 murdered on Dec. 29, 2000.Kenneth David Mackay convicted and sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 25 years.

HEATHER CHINNOCK, aged 33.Disappeared April 1, 2001 from downtown eastside Vancouver. Heathers boyfriend and friends describe her as a loving, kind hearted woman who would do anything for those she lovedRobert ( Willie ) Pickton of BC has been charged with first degree murder
NICOLE WHITEHEAD , aged 15. Nicole left North Bay on Wednesday April 25th, 2001. She phoned her mother on April 26th from Detroit, Michigan making arrangements to meet up with her the following day in London, Ontario. This was the last anyone heard from Nicole. UNSOLVED
LISA MARIE GRAVELINE AKA LISA BEAR, aged 20, found in a dumpster in downtown eastside Vancouver .wrapped in a cotton comforter, her hair pulled up in a ponytail, on May 1, 2001. She had been stabbed to death. Lisa was a drug addicted prostitute. In June 1999, her mother was found dead of a suspicious overdose behind a strip joint, the No. 5 Orange at Powell and Main. Thong Thanh Huynh, 34, charged with Second Degree murder of Lisa.
SEREENA ABBOTSWAY, aged 29, disappeared from downtown eastside Vancouver on August. 1`, 2001.Sereena was described by all who knew her as a sweet, gentle woman with limited mental ability, partially due to Fetal Alcohol Syndryme and partly due to a severe head injury received on a bad date just a year or so before her disapperance. Her DNA was found on the Pickton pig farm. She was one of the first two women identified as murdered there. Robert (Willie) Pickton charged with murder
MONA WILSON, disappeared from downtown eastside Vanvouver on Nov. 23, 2001. Mona’s boyfriend reports Mona as saying “The addiction to the heroin … overcomes the fear of being murdered .”
Nov. 23, 2001 as the couple left the Astoria Hotel on East Hastings Street, they were accosted by two men “who drove up flashing fifties and beer at her,” Her boyfriend had a gut feeling that this was bad, and asked her not to go. He tried to stop her but then one of the guys jumped out of the car and came after him with a stick. She jumped in the car, they honked the horn and took off. Mona was one of the first two women identified as murdered at the Pickton pig farm. Robert (Willie) Pickton charged with murder.
2002
BARBARA EYAPAISE, aged 24 , Reported missing January 17, 2002. Barbara’s remains were found in the Bow River, about 40 miles from Calgary on April 27, 2002. Barbara came from a family who honoured our native traditions and was loved by all who knew her. Frederick Richard Abma, 25, has been charged with first-degree murder. The trial has now been postponed til 2003.
STARR SOLWAY and her three year old daughter DANIKA April 3, 2002, Shouldice, Alta. Starr had been shot three times with a shotgun and Danika died from one shotgun blast, before their home was set ablaze. UNSOLVED
MAXINE WAPASS, age 23. Reported missing to the police on May 16th, 2002, in Winnipeg Manitoba. UNSOLVED
ELENA ASSAM-THUNDERBIRD, aged 17 found, naked body, stuck in an underwater drainage tunnel near the mouth of the Ottawa River.Sexual assault suspected,, Head injuries, cause of death drowning. Elena was described as a fun lovng young woman, who never had anything bad to say abuot anyone. She was popular amongst her peers and teachers. UNSOLVED

EDNA BERNARD, aged 28, murdered on September 23, 2002, near Leduc Alberta ( outside Edmonton) Edna had six children, all under the age of 10, including a newborn. UNSOLVED

The huge scale of this problem leaves me boggled. I spent many years feeling dispair, useless and helpless in the face of so many missing. It’s only been a few months since I began to break out of my funk, and find things I can do to add to the cause. So far, I am just trying to raise awareness, my own and anyone else who expresses interest, such as yourself.
The first thing to do, if you really want to start somewhere is to educate yourself on the facts. Its a hard task, many people have already begun sharing information which makes it easier. Feel free to look around my blog for links to other groups and organizations that have already done a huge amount of work, gathering facts, names, dates etc. This is a societal problem, and as such there is much to learn about HOW our socity operates so we can plug holes in policies that allow so many to slip through the cracks.
As you learn more, you may find yourself struggling with difficult emotions. Take heart you are not alone in wanting to do something, anything. As each voice is added, the awareness of this situation grows exponentially.
As you learn, your own mind, imagination and intelect may possibly whisper into your heart what your part in this revolution can be. Each of us have talents and abilities that may on first glance seem to have no relevence. The fact you have been drawn to this crisis shows something in you has something to offer.

The reason I write, I’ve been searching for my own sister who I last heard from in 2001. I only spoke with her once since our mothers passing back then. She called me from Victoria BC which is where she resided with her 2 daughters. When I last saw her she lived in low income housing and was also on a methadone program through either Gaurdell or an Outreach program. Because of her lifestyle I am especially worried about her. Her name is Debbie Slee, maiden name Jackson. Age is 48 I beleive, born july 9. She never had a bank acct or a sin #. Last we spoke she also told me she has diabetese. She was born in Niagara Falls but relocated to Victoria with a Jim Potter in the late 80’s. Oldest daughters name Amanda who would be aprox 18yrs of age today.
I am writing this in the hopes that someone may know her whereabouts or know of a way to track her. I even thought if she still lives through the system to pay her rent, it might be possible to get my phone # to her for I realize they probably couldn’t give me access to where she is for obvious reasons. I would so appreciate any help in locating her.

Last night I saw the news that aired from Victoria BC, and I’m curious.. CHERI LYNN SMITH I notices was amoung the names. My father is also the father of a young woman of this name and she would have been the same age as the woman I saw in the news. Did this woman reside in the Province of Ontario in her younger years? This woman would have been born around the same time, and was born in Barrie Ontario I believe or in that area.
I have only seen a pic of my half sister when she was about 10 or 11 and there is a striking similarity. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks and Regards.
I believe that Canada should bring the death penalty to truthfully serve the exact justice these sick fuckers deserve. Did you ever hear of Mindy Tran in Kelowna, BC. Search the archives if not to catch up but I lived 2 blocks from her house when she disappeared and got dumped in a ditch about a 1/2 mile from her house in a park and all I could remember thinking was what if it was my little sister.
So I do have a strong feeling towards all these women young and old but I believe in blood for blood, eye for an eye, and Life gone for a life taken. For serial killers they should be done slowly so they get the feel for the pain they have caused to all families suffering aka Paul Bernardo, Robert Pickton, and Karla Holmolka too.

The value of life is represented by the sentences given in the criminal courts of Canada, crimes against children and women happens to often. Compare the sentences of people who commit crimes against women and children and of those who are charged for importing drugs, trafficing. Obviously drug dealers and drug importers receive stiffer sentences; IT A MONEY MAKING INDUSTRY DRUGS. Women and children were once cherished and protected people,today the life of a child and woman does’nt really mean anything, otherwise they should be getting longer time for crimes against women and children.
That is alot of only WOMAN that have gone missing in that short 31 years (and thats not even all of them).
I learned today that 1 in 5 girls and 1 in 10 boys before the age of 18 will be molested or raped.

MY name is Brandi Hammond and my aunt Mary Hammond has been missing for years she went missing from Brantford Ontario a serch found fowl play some of her thing’s and a matted down area of grass a mystery remain’s it’s like everyone has forgotten every now and then I still wonder what happend to her is she alive? It really bother’s me that year’s ago somone kidnaped an inocent women mabey even killed her and got away with it and not just this time what about the many other’s who are guilty of this same crime and ceep away to to it again make’s me sick to even think of sending my childen to school knowing these sick individual’s are just around the corner.
This is a fairly comprehensive list of BC’s missing women but it has very little on other provinces including Ontario. The site is missing the Bernardo murders which took place in the early 1990’s which were very well known. It has little on any missing Ontario women or women from eastern Canada. I do believe it is a comphrehensive BC list however.

I want to tell you that my sister Angeline was missed in 1991.
She lived in Apsley, Ontario and was married with Brian Quesnell. She was missed from the begin of September and was found murdered end of November near Apsley.
According to the OPP there was a suspect called david Snow (A Friend of the family, the book of Allison Shaw is about him).
Because we are living in the Netherlands and Belgium, our family has very less information about the whole case. It seems that Snow cannot be convicted because he never did confess. From the police we couldn’t get any information. They couldn’t or didn’t wantto give information. Because we still have doubts about the whole case, we think the suspect has to be found closer to my sisters, we would ask you, if you could find something more about this case.
From here it is very difficult to get in touch with the OPP.
The policeman who was in charge in 1991 was a certain Galloway, stationed in Apsley, but it seems that there is no policestation anymore in that village.

This is to Jane Kolompar regarding your sister…….I was a good friend of Debbies between 1996 and 1998 when I lived in Victoria, BC. My daughters played all the time with her daughters Amanda and Coral ( also known as Skully) I moved back to Ontario in summer 98. I have not spoken to her since….
However.. in 2001 , one day I was in my kitchen and I was praying ( I am Christian)Suddenly Debbie ( whom i had not thought of in years ) came upon my heart and I began to pray… as I prayed I began to weep and I had a horrible sense something was wrong. I wept in prayer for your sister for over an hour.. and then there was peace in my soul. However to this very day I have never known whatever happened.. why I was praying for her.. if she had been overdosing or in trouble of some sort. Tonight I decided .. ( 6 years later) to do a google search of Victoria Obituaries on Debbie and I found this site.

Hi Hazel. Thank you for putting me in touch with Debbies sister. Unfortunately Jane was unwilling to contact Victoria police to file a missing report last year even after much prompting from me. I attempted to do it myself to no avail . I have lost touch with Jane … on purpose ..as I found it disturbing that she was unwilling to file a Missing persons report for fear that if Debbie was alive she would be angry!? And Jane was more interested in emailing me then doing whatever it took to find her sister!!!I became frustrated and a little disgusted as i would like to know what happened to Debbie but have no legal rights . Sorry I am not trying to be mean.. but if that were my sisiter I would be doing whatever it took.. Debbie is my friend.. I would really like to know if she is alive or not. Dear Hazel, with a heavy heart I write once again. It is a tragic and overwhelming loss that so many of us feel. It should bring us all closer together in ways. I feel there is strength in numbers and perhaps those of us that feel such magnitude in our losses can find a bit of peace and comfort. In knowing we are not alone. Although, I pray one day this commoness will be unknown.
My Mother’s case may never be solved. “Evelyn Edith Kabelo was brutally murdered and raped in Winnipeg, April 19th 1977 and still remains unsolved”. It was always my wish for her to be at peace. I feel that she isn’t. Maybe that is selfish of me to feel it, but it just is so. Her case was not handled right from the beginning. I wish they had some DNA…..secretly I wish that some show would air this and find some links……
I just had to vent. I have been ill and this makes me wish that I truly want the end of her short life to remembered with some resolution for those of us, her bio family and her friends just to know. 3 men, out there for years……perhaps doing this again? I just don’t know.

I did some googling and found so very little online about your mom. I did find your wonderful poem, and a handful of mentions here at this blog.
What happened to your mom, is very similar to what happened to mine. However, mine survived. She was sick for a very long time afterward. The injuries were horrific. Worse, no one took her seriously. I was eventually taken from her. Her case was never solved either.
It chokes me up, how fortunate I am to still have her in my life. We both fought extremely hard to make sure we never lost touch.
There are very few people I know who can scratch the surface of what it means to have your mother attacked for the purpose of well, extermination. It never – ever leaves you. There is no “getting over it”
I’m extremely sad for you and yours. I can’t even put it into words. The sadness sits like a lump in my throat.
I am convinced for a number of reasons that what happened to your mom, what happened to mine, what happened to dozens possibly even hundreds of others ARE connected. And I’m not the only one. Google Project Even Hand, Project Resolve, Project Kare.
I’ve been following such attacks as they’ve moved across the country, from London Ontario through to Manitoba. Saskatchewan to Alberta and BC. If I could find a pattern, you bet the above mentioned agencies can too.
I am more confident than ever, that these murders are going to be solved. That this (connection) is going to blow the top of off civil society. And change, difficult but transformative change will be achieved.
This will happen soon, relatively speaking.

Hello Wendy, I’m so sorry to hear about the circumstances of losing your mom. This sounds just horrible, and on first glance I really don’t know what to say or do for you other than to promise I will sincerely sit down and try to think of something.
I do have a few questions to help me get a handle on the situation. Please feel free to answer or decline to answer any and all of the following, they are very personal after all.
First, approximately how long ago were you left behind? When this happened was your mother residing in the US or was she still living near by in BC Canada?
Were you born in Canada too?You don’t mention what happened to you after you were left with the babysitter. Are you in contact with your biological family – mom’s side or dad’s side? If so, have you asked them for help, and if so what have they had to say?And finally, have you contacted any of the missing persons departments? (Portland Oregon and or Vancouver BC)
One last thing, you are clearly wondering if you will ever know her

Maybe she is.
Sometimes people do make difficult decisions. maybe she is alive and living with a new name. It is a possibility. There are many reasons why people choose to disappear, leaving children behind has a long and quiet history. Very often, the reason is the welfare of the child herself or his-self.

No matter what people have done, or how they have lived or mistakes they have made, they are cherished children of Mothers and Fathers and of God. I just wish the sickos and perverts could understand that each human being has the right to LIFE. Yes, some people who kill have been abused themselves but one would think that would make them MORE empathetic and compassionate towards others NOT LESS SO. I escaped an abusive marriage and had to start my whole life over all on my own. This has taught me to be grateful for every good person I meet and for every day of freedom and peace I have.
