Hand’s, Imagination, Voice Tools of the trade

Through a 2 year experiment in creativity, I’ve come to understand My hands, imagination, and voice are my tools of communication.

The joke on me is if you want to keep me quiet, you have to hold my hands. I can’t talk, if my hands are restrained. They move like butterflies all around my personal space as I speak. I think it’s a throwback to kindergarten. I remember two things about kindergarten, oh pardon me three.

The Snap dragons that grew between the cracks in the sidewalk, and up around the school itself.
The song kindergarten baby, wash your face with gravy as sung by the grade one kids.
And learning how to hula dance. That’s when I discovered hand gestures as a way to illustrate a story, I was hooked.

I’ve also learned Art IS how I communicate, my innermost feelings and realities to my external, observing self. Or to the external observing world. Either way, art is a bridge between within, and without and as such is perhaps the most profound tool human kind has yet developed.

    Hazel,

This reflection of your voice and imagination, as exemplified through your hands, portrays an insightful and intuitive introduction to your inner being. I am currently producing a mixed-media portfolio on hands and found your site through a Google search. I knew that I had difficulty talking without my hands, but never gave it further thought… but my granddaughter is much the same and has been unable to talk without her hands since she first began to really communicate around 13 months of age. There really might be something scientific to these observations. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and ideas.

I’ll keep you posted. I did one for my daughter for Christmas–on faces. It took several months’ work off and on to get it complete. I’m really just beginning to gather ideas and thoughts about hands… but I’ll put your info in my art files so I can keep in touch.
