Rocking Depiction of Kali the artist’s Id, that closely resembles the Goddess Kali, By Nina Paley…
…as discussed at Sepia Mutiny. Comments are closed so sadly I can’t express my admiration for the bang on (pun intended) depiction of Kali Durga. I’m currently working furiously on finished an entry on Kali Ma entry for my Venusian Verses, Wise -Dom Bites series and had to catalog this terrific iconographic depiction of Her Ferociousness.
PS. Speaking of Black Holes, Check out her Yoni Eye! Brilliant!

Below is a sampling of Kali Ma wisdom I Lola and I, gathered from around the net.

Zen in the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. p. 329
“Kali represents the entire physical plane. She is the drama, tragedy, humor, and sorrow of life. She is the brother, father, sister, mother, lover, and friend. She is the fiend, monster, beast, and brute. She is the sun and the ocean. She is the grass and the dew. She is our sense of accomplishment and our sense of doing worthwhile. Our thrill of discovery is a pendant on her bracelet. Our gratification is a spot of color on her cheek. Our sense of importance is the bell on her ankle.
The full and seductive, terrible and wonderful earth mother always has something to offer.”

Kali’s four arms represent the complete cycle of Creation/ Destruction/ Creation/Destruction, contained within her. She represents the creative and destructive rhythms of the cosmos. Her sword is the sword of knowledge, that slices through ignorance and destroys false consciousness. She is said to open the gates of freedom with this sword, having cut the bonds that bind human beings.

Poets and mystics advise us that in order to know Her we must plunge into Her luscious, radiant, blackness, dive through our fear of the unknown, into Her overwhelming mystery and allow ourselves to dissolve in Her velvety midnight embrace.

Kali’s dwelling place, the cremation ground denotes a place where the five elements (Sanskrit: pancha mahabhuta) are dissolved. Kali dwells where dissolution takes place.
The image of a recumbent Shiva lying under the feet of Kali represents Shiva as the passive potential of creation and Kali as his Shakti.
(snip)
It is she that powers him. This Shakti is expressed as the i in Shiva’s name. Without this i, Shiva becomes Shva, which in Sanskrit means a corpse. Thus suggesting that without his Shakti, Shiva is powerless or inert.

It is partly correct to say Kali is a goddess of death but She brings the death of the ego as the illusory self-centered view of reality. Nowhere in the Hindu stories is She seen killing anything but demons nor is She associated specifically with the process of human dying like the Hindu god Yama (who really is the god of death). It is true that both Kali and Shiva are said to inhabit cremation grounds and devotees often go to these places to meditate. This is not to worship death but rather it is to overcome the I-am-the-body idea by reinforcing the awareness that the body is a temporary condition. Shiva and Kali are said to inhabit these places because it is our attachment to the body that gives rise to the ego. Shiva and Kali grant liberation by removing the illusion of the ego. Thus we are the eternal I AM and not the body.

Wonderful sources, but I thought I’d supplement this by pointing out a couple of films too:

Hey Chiru, I responded to you Here.
BTW Kali Ma is my Goddess too you Bigot!!!
@ Chiru, your view on your own professed religious beliefs make you too darn easy to anger. I thought people generally found solace through their beliefs, while you seem to use them as a tool to propagate hate, that’s pretty sad.
And I missed something, when did someone fuck anyone (let alone a mother) during this whole picture posting process? I didn’t think that was a requirement. Note to self… you have a 200 picture album to upload.
D. My Hero!
I am happy that you worship and understand a lot about the Mother, but the cartoon image is an insult to her. Firstly, she does not hold the male genital in her right hand. I know you said it is not Kali. If it is not her, then why put it up in this space, which makes people assume it is her? The other picture of her is a true representation of my Mother.
Hmm, so many more people are offended by a depiction of the male genitalia being on show than a giant frickin’ sword. I guess its the whole sexuality being inherently more offensive than violence thing.
and some vulnerable guys preferring to be decapitated than emasculated, perhaps.
So astute Kieran. I find it preposterous that the depiction of genitalia is more offensive than the depiction of violence. Seriously what does that say about us as a whole? Definitely a worthy subject for a future blog post. Thanks so much for your comments.
Kieran makes a darn good point, I’d like to see a post and some discussion around this.
Off topic, you can definitely cut off my head before you cut off my… well, head. One I use for all my critical thought processes, and the other is only good for helping me maintain motor functions and remember to breathe in and out.
LOL! I had to read that twice.
Distatica hasn’t anyone told you two heads are better than one?
I’ve been thinking about the sex vs violence post ever since Kieran came by. I don’t know when I’ll get around to it, but I hope you come back when its finished.
BTW… I was just wondering wth is D?! Thanks for showing up right on schedule.
xox
Sadly enough, I’ve related you to violence and women… well, in some regards it’s good, it shows you’re doing your job really well.
I was reading about Hans Reiser a Linux programmer, and the primary developer for ReiserFS which is a way of storing files on a hard drive and speeding up access to them (that is incredibly simplifying it). Apparently in 2006 the piece of crap decided to kill his wife (Nina Reiser), and didn’t finally admit to it until they had him by the balls and were ready to string him up.
In the open source community you tend to run across a number of familiars, those that dedicate many hours of their time for both profit and nothing, and you develop a sort of false “trust” with these people. While I do not know Reiser — nor have I ever chatted with him — I’ve used the filesystem, I have met similar people and it just really makes you think.
Anyways, I read that, thought of you, checked my email, found some comments here and got to have a laugh for a minute at the “vulnerable” comment. The thing is it does not take a vulnerable man to feel that way, it just takes a man. We use it to pee, we use it to please, and we use it to write in the snow. And if you can’t do that, well then what the hell fun is being a man anyways?!
Anyways, I’ve got a big project I’m working on right now — if my boss finds me writing about my wiener and not configuring machines I’ll lose my head, penis, and job — have fun!
