Police are trying to solve the mystery of how a body came to be found in smouldering embers on a dead-end country road west of Barrie in the middle of the night.

And they are further adding to the mystery by revealing little else.

“Who knows where the heck it came from,” said Ken Miller, watching an OPP helicopter land on a strip of grass on his cleared farmland.

Police from the Nottawasaga OPP detachment did say it was 12:23 a. m. Friday when a motorist calling 911 reported a fire burning in the east ditch along the 6th Line of Essa Township.

When the OPP, Essa firefighters and Simcoe County paramedics converged on the scene, they found human remains. A coroner later confirmed the body to be dead, according to the police press release.

A few farms and just over a dozen homes are located on the dirt stretch where the discovery was made.

But the police investigation dominated the area Friday. That last stretch of the 6th Line was closed off to traffic while police concentrated on the scene. At the northern intersection a few officers were conducting a grid search and investigators in an OPP helicopter searched for clues from the air.
